Karel’s live falls to pieces when his father, who had abandoned him twenty years ago, dies under suspicious circumstances. Without a chance for reconciliation and with little hope for closure, Karel sets out on a desperate search for the truth - not only about his father’s death, but about himself.
Recognition is inspired by true events from the life of the author’s father. The family wanted to officially declare the father dead in 2014 — but the police unexpectedly provided a phone number. The father had been hiding in a small Tuscan town in Italy, but on the very first night of their visit he was killed in a car accident.
The following day, after identifying the body, they discovered that he had been living as a homeless. The film unfolds as a story of one encounter that came too late.
THEME
The universe is a chain of cause and effect, creating the illusion of order and control. Randomness is an inseparable part of reality—one we often refuse to accept. We search for meaning in chaos, fearing the idea that we are merely drifting.
If nothing is predetermined, then meaning is ours to create. Every decision, no matter how small, has consequences. Yet accepting chance doesn’t lead to despair; it opens the path to a deeper understanding.
